November 12-14, 2010:  West Palm Beach, FL

 A 3-day introduction to the principles of evaluating rider posture and biomechanics as they relate to equestrian performance. This course is offered to physical therapists (24 CEUs) wishing to expand their practice to serve equestrian sport clients. The participant will learn common rider musculoskeletal imbalances, restrictions and asymmetries, and will become familiar with exercise and treatment techniques to address them. General equestrian, and sport specific musculoskeletal demands will be addressed. Spine, as well as upper and lower kinetic chain dysfunctions will be covered. Basic saddle and tack considerations will be discussed as well.  Both classroom and hands on practical instruction will allow the therapist experiential learning opportunity. 

Day One:  Physical demands overview of horse and rider. Relationship of forces transmitted horse to/from rider.   Posture, conformation and gaits of the horse overview.  Rider postural impact on the horse.  Anatomy /biomechanics/physiology of the horse performing under saddle. Rider posture requirements, general and sport specific.

Day Two:  Center of gravity of horse and rider.  Use of core and challenges associated with mounted position.  Ultrasound findings in TA versus obliques with top riders. Key muscle groups for stabilization upper and lower quadrant.  Common postural faults & overuse syndromes. Assessment of rider posture, key ROM and strength, and use of core. 

Day Three:  Introduction to Balimo chair, sport specific assessment tools & treatment techniques.  Saddle fit for rider. Cross training for the rider (yoga, Pilates, Balimo chair, functional kinetic chain exercise and more…)
